Effective March 18, 2025, IBM announced new collaborations with NVIDIA, including the new Content-Aware Storage (CAS) capability, the introduction of NVIDIA NeMo Inference Microservices (NIM), and the addition of NVIDIA H200 instances to IBM Cloud. These innovations enhance IBM’s AI capabilities.
IBM Content-Aware Storage (CAS)
IBM’s new Content-Aware Storage (CAS) capability allows enterprises to extract insights from unstructured data for AI applications like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and AI reasoning. This ensures responsible scaling without compromising trust or safety. IBM Storage Scale is a key component of CAS, enabling it to handle large volumes of unstructured data and improve AI responses. Storage Scale enhances communication between GPUs and storage using NVIDIA BlueField-3 DPUs and NVIDIA Spectrum-X networking. CAS will be included in the next IBM Fusion update, planned for Q2 (April to June) of 2025.
IBM watsonx Integration
IBM watsonx.ai is IBM’s enterprise-grade AI platform and developer studio. It allows organizations to develop and deploy AI models. NVIDIA NeMo Inference Microservices (NIM) are GPU-optimized AI models packaged in containers that run on NVIDIA inference engines.
IBM is integrating NVIDIA NIM into watsonx.ai. This means that when you use IBM watsonx.ai, you can leverage NVIDIA NIM microservices directly within the platform. This allows organizations to develop and deploy AI models using watsonx.ai and ensures robust monitoring and governance with watsonx.governance. This interoperability is crucial for adopting advanced AI applications.
IBM Cloud and NVIDIA H200 Instances
IBM Cloud now offers NVIDIA H200 instances, designed to meet the demands of modern AI workloads and larger foundation models. That means, when using IBM Cloud, you have the option to select NVIDIA H200 instances as a GPU option based on your specific needs. These instances provide high memory capacity and bandwidth, supporting compute-intensive tasks.
What is IBM Fusion?
IBM Fusion is a hybrid cloud infrastructure offering designed to provide robust storage and compute capabilities for enterprises. It integrates various AI and data management technologies to support complex workloads and enhance performance, security, and governance.
